Nestled in the foothills, of the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains, Santa Fe sits at an altitude of 7,000 feet in north-central New Mexico. Santa Fe has four distinct seasons with snow during the winter. Known for its clear blue skies, Santa Fe enjoys more than 300 days a year of sunshine. The hottest months are typically July and August when daytime temperatures can reach into the mid to upper nineties, but the evenings remain cool as the daily temperature typically changes 30 degrees due to the city's elevation. Normal rainfall is 14 inches a year.
Founded in 1607, Santa Fe is the second oldest city and the oldest capital city in the United States. At one time all lands west of the Mississippi were governed from the Palace of the Governors on the Santa Fe Plaza.
